USB Flash Drive is no longer recognized by my computer nor by my Laptop. Is there a chance the data is there?

21 Mar

My first concern is in recovering the data that was on it (I used it as a data backup thinking it was more secure than using the computer hard drive).

But, neither Windows machine seems to recognize the USB drive any more.

Are there any work-arounds?

I would take it to the Geek Squad or someplace to see if the data can be recovered

If you can’t see it then recovery is not going to be easy.

Have a read of this guide on my New PC Help site

There is a chance it is still on the PC you backed it up from.
Even if you deleted it from the PC

check it on another computer. if it still doesnt work then your backup is gone. if it does work maybe you should take it in. also try other accessories in that same port. if other stuff doesnt work then you’ll probably need to fix the port. or just live with it. if its the system that is bad. also check the drive on any USB ports in the back of you pc.

breakdown:check thumb drive on back-of-pc ports, then another pc.
check other accessories on same port as usually used.

sounds to me like you lost the drive. your backup is probably shot. search your computer for the files that were on your thumbdrive.

Your flash drive is probably busted, it’s unlikely you will be able to recover the data.
But since the point of having data “backed up” is that it is an extra copy of the data (a “backup” is never the only copy of the data, or even the main copy being used) you can get a new drive and backup the stuff off the computers.
