I have a 3.5 inch 320GB HD that has failed and I need the data recovered. The drive is not physically damaged, but will not boot into Windows, or show up as a recognized HD. I know the Geek Squad has a service, but its seems a little pricey, so I would like to know if there are any other “good” companies that specialize in data recovery and can offer a fair price.

Somewhat hypothetical situation:
Computer user wrote a games application in the mid-1990s stored on floppy disk (non-MFM format; actually, GCR, or Group Code Recording). User has tried virtually everything to recover the source code to this game, and even sent said floppy disk to data recovery lab for analysis.
Other than remarking to client that data recovery would cost “several thousand dollars” and “wasn’t, generally, worth the expense,” said lab sent disk back to consumer.
Short of using a time machine to go back in time and recover the lost source code, what is consumer to do in order to restore the lost data (besides spending countless hours rewriting it, which isn’t a fun/desired option)? I’m assuming even places like NASA/NSA would give consumer blank and weird stares given the oldness of the storage medium, and perhaps wouldn’t be helpful in recovering the data at all.
Thanks,
Paul
Ok, this is embarrassing…TRS-80 level embarrassing. The game was written for the Commodore 128 (an old computer like the Commodore 64).

Technician said he could recover files from my damaged hard drive from software but leaves it in the raw format .ado file extension. Hopefully there is some software that can convert this back to something that can be opened.

holy crap, i am so angry, my 500gb seagate was running fine, then it started humming very loudly, made a large clunk, and does not work. seagate wants 1,400$ (!!!) to recover my 120GB of lost data. is there a cheaper data recovery service anyone knows of? Or is there anyway to make a broken (it rattles loudly if you shake it, its fried.) hard drive usable to recover data?
Thanks for the help!

I have a Seagate 500 GB/7200rpm something or other hard drive that suffered trauma when the Macbook it was in hit the ground. The drive is like 2 years old. I sent it to Data Recovery Labs and they quoted $1690 to recover the data. Surely there must be an alternative that *normal* people can afford? Any tips?
What do you mean by “freezing it”?
But can this be done if the dead computer can’t even be booted?

There are numerous data recovery services. Some cost around $1000 to recover 200gb of data. Why does it cost so much?

Got back from a trip, loaded pictures and hit the start slide show button, nothing happened, can’t stop, can’t do anything. Feeling tired and short of patient, I pushed the power button thinking I’ll restart the computer. It didn’t reboot and a message telling me to backup my data, my hard drive is in imminant danger or something. I selected restart normally, it didn’t work, tried restart using last known settings, it took about 6 hours and went back to the same screen, I later found out that would’ve damaged my hard drive a lot more. I tried putting in a copy of XP professional to try to cause it to perform checkdisk, it says no TLDR, and went back to the same message about hard drive problem. I tried the recovery disk expecting to find advance option to either install master boot or perform non-destructive system recovery per manuel, found out that it didn’t give me the choice, paniced when I saw partitioning hard drive, I ejected the recovery disk and here I am.
