Ok I just downnloaded Microsoft Security Essentials for my dell desktop. But for some strange reason when I try to update my virus definitions it throws me a error code and tells me it fails to update. I have tried everything. I run vista home edition. I tried enabling the hidden administrator account and trying to update the program it failed, I turned off all my firewalls..it still failed. Im beginning to think I may have to just reinstall vista all together because for one my internet has gotten infected with some sort of virus where anytime i try and click on a link, i get redirected to another site. Its a nasty virus so I tried downloading Microsoft Security Essentials to try and fix the issue but the program isnt working. Also my windows defender and windows update fail to update as well. So im trying everything in my power to fix the issue without having to reinstall my operating system. I also tried a system restore, however when I tried to restore it i was given a error message letting me know that my OS: C\ has file corruption. Any suggestions?
After saving my data, a dialogue box pops up saying: Word cannot access the file. After that when i search the hard disk the file is missing. I want to know whether it is a virus. I am sure that the data is deleted. Is there a way to recover the data. Can i use Norton Ghost to recover the data. It is a file that is very important to me. I have another copy in a floppy but that does not contain the changes I made to my document today. Should I buy Norton Ghost to recover the file. Is it possible to recover the file by some meathod. The chanes that i did today are very important and i cannot re-do it. Will System restore help?

My situation:
A family member wanted a laptop restored to stock conditions–after backing up pertinent data, I proceeded with a quick format, OS + App reinstall… only to find out that important contact and calendar/scheduling information was not saved!!
Setup: same XP prof. OS, partitioning, programs (outlook 2003 in particular), (matching) account-name.
I’ve tried several recovery tools (Migo’s recover lost data & recover my files). The latter is unique in that it pulls up both written and overwritten files, yet I’ve been able to discover 0 .wab/.pst files that should have been in the appdata/microsoft/outlook folder… I should have at least found overwritten files. Anyone have suggestions for recovering Outlook files after formatting?
If we start Outlook configuration from scratch, will any contact data be retrieved if they enter the email address they used previously?

Additionally… does anyone know the name of the file(s) + folder where the calendar/scheduling data is stored?
I am having trouble opening a Microsoft Word file. When I try to open it, I get the following message: “The document caused a serious error the last time it was opened. You may continue opening it or perform data recovery by clicking ‘Recover Data.’ Clicking ‘Recover Data will extract text out of your document but all formating and pictures will be lost.”
I tried to open and I got the following message: “Word failed reading from file. Please restore the network connection or replace floppy disk and retry.”
When I tried to recover the data, only part of my document opened. I have also tried to change it from .doc to .txt and it will not open in Word, Wordpad or Notepad. When I pressed control, alt, delete the WIndows Task Manager says Word is not responding. How can I repair the document? Is there a program I can download for free to repair my document?
Tried to use Open and Repair feature and I get the following message:
“Word failed reading from file. Please restore network connection or replace floppy disk and retry.”
Could there be something wrong with the floppy disk? How do I fix the floppy disk?
I used to have microsoft office on my computer, but then for some unknown reason everything got erased.I still have the icon to open it up on my computer, but when I do It says I need the “Product Key” which i don’t have.Is there away for me to activate it without the “Product Key”.Is there a way i can recover the lost data at a computer “helping” store or something?Please, I need help to reinstall this.
Whenever I create and or open Microsoft word (2003) files, it just goes:
=Preparing to install
=Please wait Microsoft word 2003 to configure (etc….)
=The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM/other removable disk that is not available
Then i click exit (x) and it goes:
=Error 1706.Setup cannot find requested files (etc…..)
I click OK
Then the window opens BUT it has no paper thing that you type on…..and some buttons are dimmed!!!!!!!!
*Please help me…..my sister borrowed it then when i got it back, its like this already!!!!!! please dont tell me that i need to ask her…..we BARELY see each other (school,work,etc.)
