Can I fix a boot disk failure without bringing to a pro?

09 Jun

I know the files on my hard disk are still good because one of the millions of times I’ve tried strarting windows, it worked and I checked the files. However, I didn’t backup the files while it was actually working. Since then starting windows has not worked. Do I need a Windows XP disc to try to repair it? Otherwise, is there a way to open the files on my desktops corrupt hard drive onto my laptop to copy the files and then just replace the corrputed hard disk that exists in my desktop with a new one?

HD failure – Please help?

07 Jun

OK, here’s what has happened so far and what I tried:

Windows wouldn’t boot- stuck right after boot screen said no bootable CD
Tried several different bootable CDs- said no bootable CD for first drive then hung while accessing the drive that had a disc in it.
Tried same thing with other disc drive.

Removed HD and put it in an external enclosure:
-Windows recognized drive and assigned letter but warning pops up and says it needs formatted before it can be used.
-Try to open/browse drive> “I:\ is not accessable. The directory is corrupt and unreadable.

I think it is physically working fine but something is wrong with the file structure or partition (it has two partitions)
I think it would let me format it but I want to try and recover data first.

Is there anyway to recover it? If I do a quick format to correct the file structure could my data be recovered?

I tried PC Inspector File Recovery and a few other programs.

Here’s the weird part. I put a different drive in the original computer (still won’t boot- I’m on another one) and I got the same error when trying to boot without a CD, then the same result as before when trying to boot with a CD.

It’s possible that the power supply damaged the first drive and now has messed up the second one as well but the first one seems fine other than the file structure now that it is in an enclosure.

What should I try next?
-My Computer shows it as 0 bytes used and 0 free.
-file system type is blank (RAW?) it was NTFS
-device status says it is running properly (and I can here it spin)
-Can’t run disc check “because windows can not access the disc”

So the solution for a failure to boot up period on an e210882 MB is to trash it and put a new MB in?

06 Jun

Okay, thanks, because I’ve been running around town trying to find a mini-cable for the power button. Try finding one of those, I dare ya’! Why can’t there be a FREE tech-chat sight instead of trying to gouge everyone like “fix-ya” and the others do?

HDD failure?

02 Jun

Hello,
I have a dell lattitude d600 laptop, and it would seem that there is some hdd failure.
I can see the hdd in bios, however it does not boot, saying that there is no valid boot disk.
I have boot up using david’s ultimate boot cd, and it would seem that my c: drive is now a raw drive.

Any chance to recover the data on this drive?

Regards
I managed to recover the lost data, by booting up with David’s ultimate boot disk, and recover the data with GetDataBack for NTFS.

thanks all for your input

MacBook Hard Drive Failure?

27 May

The internal Toshiba HD on my MacBook died. I’ve been able to start up off of an external drive. In Disk Utility the Toshiba HD shows up as an unformatted drive. It will not allow me to mount it, but may allow me to erase it.

I am running Data Rescue in hopes of getting back my files. Is this a futile process? It doesn’t seem to have recovered anything in the eight hours I’ve left it running.

If I do give up and restore the drive, will there be any way to get any of the data back? What should I do?
