I have a mac laptop and also use bootcamp to run windows xp. but there are a few times when external USB hard drives are unplugged “by accident” (ie not properly unmounted), or that windows crashes while running data from such a drive.
This, for my NTFS+ external usb hard drives, almost always results in a broken catalog / or element which then makes the drive unmountable or unuseable. Sometimes is can be repared, by diskutilities or macdrive, but sometimes not. I’m loosing a lot of time transfering a whole disk’s content to another, then erasing reformating the drive. Is there anyway to secure the drive by software ? Ie make sure that even if the computer crashes or the power goes of or whatever, drive hierarchy can be restored, and mounted. a kind of protection for these 1Tera USB external hard disks ?
please don’t answer “be more careful”, accidents just do happen, and some of the drive’s data is valuable. At one point i even had to mount one on linux to recover te data, all of this because of an accidental unplugging. but rather than spending 20 hours recovering, i would much rather back up the drive hierachy catalog at times, to protect it and have it a safe mount point from which to work.
is this possible ?
to those who cannot be bothered to read the question properly : i am not asking how to repair a usb disk, but how to secure the info so that it wan’t be broken in such a way. please read the details before answering. And I’ve also had drives which are “unrepairable”, meaning they have to be reformated to be mounted again. i’m sick of this and want to try to protect the structure / catalogue / hierarchy of my external USB drives, IF this is possible. hence the question, which is not a question on repairing drives.
thanks

is there a way to protect an USB external disk drive’s content from errors which then make it unmountable ?
if i want to sell my hard drives (sata) how do I go about erasing it?
I know I can’t just go right click and format. is there format program that can guarantee that it will prevent anyone that tries to recover data.
would anyone happen to work fro a company that frequently recovers hard drives from crashes or errors?
im currently looking for a place that can recover the data from a hard drive that belongs to my brother. hes an iraq war veteran and his external hard drive recently crashed taking all of his images along with it. images that he cant get anywhere else (this WAS his backup)
if you happen to work for acompany that frequently sends hard drives (or even on occasion) to get either repaired or the data recovered off of them…would you be willing to take my brothers drive and recover the information for me?
the reason i ask is because companies are asking between $1500 and $2500 to recover the files and i cant spare that kind of money . i would if i could.
any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated.
Faulty power supply destroys all hard drives?
I have a computer that had a faulty power supply (it popped and made an electric smell). I replaced the power supply, but now it seems the hard drives are non-existant. The PC had two IDE drives and one SATA drive. When I plug the drives into a different PC, it acts as if nothing is plugged in at all. Could a faulty power supply really destroy three hard drives just like that? Is there ANY way to recover the data? The PC belonged to a friend of mine who died, and I would really love to obtain the last pictures she took and last emails she wrote.

Is there an adapter for new dell laptop hard drives to SATA or USB?
We use a lot of dell laptops, Latitude D420’s D430’s etc. I’d like to be able to hook them to a SATA-USB Adapter that I have to recover data sometimes. But the drive’s only connector seems to be a ribbon cable that runs into the motherboard. Is there a way to convert this to a standard SATA connector somehow?
how do i format only my c drive and not the other drives of my hard-disk ?
my pc isnt working as windows xp file got corrupted.
my c drive has 13 bad sectors and all other drives work well and combined contain a lot of data which i need to recover.
my computer doesnt start because my windows xp file got corruoted and i cant reload (format pc) it due to c drive not working.

How do I recover data from two 750GB hard drives that were formatted with JBOD?
There’s A LOT of stuff on them, most of which personal videos and photos that I would be very sad if I lost forever.
How would I got about getting them off of these disks? I have a USB to SATA connector but they were formatted to be used witha JBOD enclosure. Is there a service or software I can use to connect them with a USB to SATA connector or am I going to have to do something insane and expensive to get it back?
My External Drives (Driver) is corrupted and I need to recover the Data I lost. Any Suggestions?
I took it into Comp USA to get a data recovery but they were unable to do a data transfer. They suggested Drivesavers.com but it looks pricy. Could you recommend anything better?
Is it safe to switch the hard drives of two diffrent, but same make and model laptop, to recover lost data?
The d/c port on my laptop is currently broken and I am unable to turn it on anymore. My friend has the same laptop. Is it ok to put my hard drive into his laptop, so that I can get the files that I need, and then putting his back in when I am done.
SCSI RAID controller on my HP Netserver went kerplunk… can i rescue data on my drives using a SCSI cable?
During a recent crazy power outage (where everything in the building seems to have gone out in phases), the NetRAID controller on my HP NetServer went whacko and only “occasionally” detects my server’s SCSI drives. I’ve tried swapping drive locations and whatnot (as much as the required drive config limitations will allow), but two of my critical data store drives remain unavailable (or worse yet, Win2K Server declares the drives unformatted and asks if I want to format them… um, hell no!). So I guess my question is this: would I be able to retrieve the data on these unrecognizable drives and transfer it to a regular IDE drive if I had a SCSI cable to connect the drives to another computer? I don’t think the data has suffered any damage, but the drives just aren’t accessible thru Win2K Server anymore. Help..??!?
I think it was RAID1 but I wouldn’t stake my life on it… I kinda “inherited” this server from a surplus auction and I must confess I’m not really familiar with HP’s NetRAID controller or its config utility. You think I should just turn this over to a pro?
