Hard drive trouble…any advice?
Help please….my laptop fell over and I think it physically damaged my hard drive. I took it out of the laptop and put it in an external cabinet and it doesn’t read. I’m sure its damaged because I tried an old hard drive in the cabinet and it read…Obviously chances of recovering some files are slim to none, but really is it done for? Is there a way I can fix it and retrieve some data? I really need some files off from it. Please let me know any possible ways of fixing it.
(and yes I know the #1 rule to back up and what not…it just caught me off guard)

recovering another hard drive?
my old computer crashed about a year ago(blue screen) something went wrong with XP. now i have a new computer and my old hard drive still has personal data on it. I would like to recover that data. now, if i just plug it into my new computer, will it show up? how can i hock up this hard drive as a slave drive??? what do i have to do at the boot up? (I DON’T WANT TO MESS UP MY NEW COMPUTER) if adding a 2nd hard to it, will mess with boot settings or something, i won’t do it.
External hard drive use?
My previous external hard drive burnt out after just a few months of not-so-often use, but I luckily managed to recover the data and transfer it to a new one. I’d like to prevent this one from burning out so fast!
So I want to make sure I’m not violating some important principle of external hard drive use. It’s a Western Digital MyBook. I keep the power cord plugged in all the time, but only plug in the USB cable if I want to actually access data on it (or write to it). It appears to be designed so that it’s only really “on” if the USB cable is plugged in; I assume that with the USB unplugged and the power plugged in, it keeps the drive spinning so the data stays intact but doesn’t actually provide enough power for data access and manipulation.
Is this a “good practice”?
Thanks.
I formatted my PC with a bootable Win XP CD. Now only C drive appears and all data is lost. Can it be recoverd?
I had a FAT system file first, but during format it only gave me the option of a NTFS format. So I did it. There were 4 partitions but after format it shows only C drive. I did a complete format and not a quick format. Is it possible to recover my lost data? Please let me know if there are any techniques available? Help…
Thank you for your valuable suggestions..
I will definitely back up data from now on…

External hard drive data recovery?
Hey there… so I bought this SimpleTech 500gb external hard drive to free up space on my pc thinking it was much newer and more reliable than my aged computers hard drive. I moved all my data off of my pc on to the new external hard drive. Well… all was well until my girlfriend knocked the darn thing over…now it’s making clicky noises etc. Can anyone help me figure out how to retrieve the data off of it? I’d prefer not to send the hard drive to some specialist to protect privacy. I’d appreciate any good advice on how to recover the data, I don’t have a lot of money, but would rather spend more to fix it to ensure privacy. Any help please??

My computer wont start up, and i need to get my files off the hard drive. can some one please advise?

How do i retrieve the data from a folder in a flash drive which is rendered corrupt or unreadable.?
Pleeeeeaassssseeee help me. You see, because I was in hurry, I pulled out the flash drive before I click the safely remove button. The result was that my report became unreadable. Now it’s either that I typed a 6 page report all over again from my MEMORY or I find a recovery porgram. Please, do you know any FREE program that would allow you to recover files. If you don’t know, then I guess I have to do my…..report…. all over again…………………….*shudder*. Please, spare me the torture. I mean, I like to do reports, just not over again when I have already spent my time doing it the first time.
Also, I pulled the drive from a random public computer, so no luck picking it up there again.

Correct replacement drive for Inspiron 8600 C? Data Recovery?
sigh
bad news: my hard drive is toast, (horrible whirring noise + ‘no bootable drive’)
good news: 11 days left on my warranty
bad news: Dell replaced with “Hard Drive, 60GB,SFX, EUCL, 8500″ which did not fit correctly as pins stuck out of caddie
bad news: Dell’s 2nd replacement was same as above
new news: tomorrow I am supposed to receive the correct replacement drive, it is listed as “Hard Drive,80G 5.4K,Aries-b,6400″
A> is this a the correct drive?
B> is there any way at all to recover any of the data from my old drive? Apparently it still spins fine, the head is just not reading.
Thanks!
Cheap data recovery services for external hard drive?
My hard drive just broke, and so far, I could only find services to recover data to be more than $200. Does anyone know any cheaper services?
My hard drive is broken to the point where it’ll turn on, you can hear it spinning, then it’s starts beeping and clicking. My computer cannot detect it. Is the data still recoverable? Is the hard drive still repairable? And can I use any of the solutions in the answers, now that you know this?
Ok I don’t see how a data recovery program can help if my computer cannot detect the hard drive.
My Hard drive failed and I don’t have it backed up – HELP!?
List of problems/actions:
- PC froze up after I heard “clicking noises,” had to shut down the system (hard).
- My desktop is and/or Windows won’t load in Safe Mode!
- We used a boot-up disk, tried to run chkdsk, process could not finish.
- Took out the drive and tried to copy it (using a slave external drive unit) onto my Maxtor external drive using my laptop.
- The laptop didn’t recognize the slaved drive, but I could hear the drive running.
So, it seems to be beyond that point – but I need/want to get my data! Now WHAT?
Notes from another answer “if it is beyond this point there are companies that in most cases recover the data but it is expensive.”
How expensive and what is able to be done?
Thanks so much for you help!!!
Jayne
Forgot to mention – I did the drive in the freezer trick, didn’t work!
liverpoolscousermarc…
I already opened the PC and used a jump drive to attempt to recognize the the data via my laptop and save my data on my external Maxtor drive.
To who ever asked – the drive that failed is from my Compac desktop: Seagate Model 8T380020A (80 GB).
I have already had the drive replaced and have started the desktop fresh.
