Hard Drive “Click of Death”?

The other day, my computer randomly shut down, and when I got to the BOOT process, my hard drive started making a strange clicking sound that I’d never heard before, and wouldn’t even boot to POST.

I realized that my read/write head had malfunctioned, meaning there’s pretty much nothing I can do to retrieve the data on there aside from taking the drive apart and replacing the head (something that’s really dangerous to do if you don’t know how).

My question is, are there any places that will recover the data on my drive for a reasonable price? I’m a college student, and I don’t have $1000 bucks to shell out to a data recovery company. Any advice would be MUCH appreciated.

How can I recover files on my flash drive? When I click on that drive, it now asks if I want to format.?

I have about 512 Mb of picture files on my flash drive, but now it shows the entire disk as full (its a 1Gb drive) and it is showing 0 space available and 0 space used. It prompts me to format? Yes/No. Of course I did not opt to format. Instead I safely removed the drive and began to search for answers. My friend told me I may have just lost the index file and somehow it may be recoverable. Help!! My pictures of my baby being born are on there…and I have not made a backup yet. I would be very grateful for any suggestions. I am using Windows XP, and the flash drive is a 1GB “Coby”. I have never had anything like this happen before now.

do i really have to click “safely remove USB” in Windows’ System Tray before i unplug USB drive from computer

I’ve unplugged the USB drive a few times before without clicking “safely remove USB”. The USB drive is still very operational, its data transfer has not slowed down, files have been transferred without error or any corruption. I’m starting to think that clicking “safely remove USB” is a load of crap.
