Ok techies–I did something stupid. I ran system recovery with no back-up?

08 Jun

My daughter got my (her) computer so jammed up with spyware and unwanted programs and I was trying to clean it up-removing unwanted programs-running adaware- deleting old application files. well the screen went blank and the only page I could access was the set-up page. Maybe I read it wrong because I though it said there were 2 ways to run system recovery. 1) was to have back up discs of all your data files and pictures etc.(which stupidly I had never made). but it said I could run recovery a second way and it would save all of my old files in a separate partition. This is windows XP. Well needless to say–everything is gone-and I cant find it-I call Greed Squad- if I give them the Hard drive thay can probably recover most of my old pictures and documents–starting at 259.00!!!. Well I did take out the hard drive so I wouldn’t overwrite anything that might be recoverable, and installed a new one. So does anyone know how I can get my stuff of the old drive-any good indy websit

Windows freezes on boot with secondary HDD plugged in! (Has to do with Windows 7 Backup)?

07 Jun

First, some back story on my problem:

I tried using Windows 7 backup. I used the default settings and backed it up onto my D: drive. It failed at about 70%. Tried again. Still failed.
I ran out of time, so I decided to just forget it. I deleted the incomplete backup files (Some C: backup file and MediaID.bin). When I came home and turned on my computer, POST took longer than usual and I noticed it didn’t find my SATA 2 drive, which is my D: drive. My computer ended up freezing while booting windows. After some trial and error, I found that unplugging my D drive stopped the freezing.

Now here’s my question: How do I recover my D drive if I can’t get my computer to boot while it’s plugged in?

I can’t seem to hot swap my internal SATA drive – it’ll freeze when I plug in the data cable. I’m thinking of buying an external drive case to see if that’ll work, but if there are any other suggestions… Don’t hesitate!

HP Backup and Recovery?

28 May

I have a hp 510 notebook that I would want to know the answers for. If for some reason I had to recover my computer in case of an attack, and now mostly backup and recovery are already installed in the cpu, well like when you start up the computer it would say press F11 if its an emergency. If I had to do it, and the whole computer formated, after the formation of the computer, will it still be there or is it just a one time using thing? I also want to know that I am thinking of deleting the recovery things on the computer and install it on a cd well it takes 9 cds to put the data in, and I don’t want to waste that many on a cd. I can’t put it on a dvd because it doesnt have a burner. Can I like put it on a external hard drive? Thanks if you answered!!!

Windows XP Bluescreen. How can I backup my HD?

25 May

My Dell computer (running windows XP Home Edition) has gotten to the point where it can not boot Windows up at all. Not normally, under safe mode, or under any circumstances. I have dealt with this before, and my only known option is to reformat my hard drive. This is no problem, however I have countless amounts of priceless data on the current hard drive. My question is this: Is there a way to either recover my system, or else back up all of my information on a separate hard drive at this point? Please, any suggestions at this point are helpful. Thank you so much.

Where is the backup?

23 May

I have a HP pavillion a1610. I had experienced a bit of an issue and had to do a restore by pressing the F10 key on boot. This was not a partition format. But I ended up losing my profile setting and everything I had on my desktop (nothing else). The computer however said backing up user data prior to restore. I am wondering if there is some way to recover my profile and desktop programs or if they are actually backup no the drive where can I find them. I am running winXP media center edition.

Thanks

20 May

while trying to delete some entries clean up a virus, I have accidentally deleted some entries that read something like %SystemRoot%\dll…..

After that, I am unable to download emails into my Outlook.

Is there anyway I can recover the deleted entries (which I cannot remember the path or value+data) without having to reformat my entire OS?

Thank you.

What do you use to backup your files, photos and music? If you don’t backup your files, what are your reasons?

19 May

Computer users store irreplaceable files like financial documents, family photos and digital music on their systems. However, 46% of U.S. adults never backup their personal information. If a hard drive crash or natural disaster results in data loss, these files can never be recovered. What prevents computer users from backing up their data when it can save them a great deal of trouble in the future?

How do I backup Outlook Express 6.0 if I can’t boot into windows?

04 May

The computer is giving me the blue screen of death (error 0×0000007f). It loops and I can’t fix it. I’ve tried almost everything. Im to the point where I’ve already reinstalled windows on another hard drive and Im ready to pull data off my old hard drive. The old hard drive contains all of my Outlook Express files but I don’t know how to recover them and make them functional in my new Windows Environment. The link below gives a step by step tutorial but I don’t know how to copy registry files from a hard drive that isn’t the one with the running OS. http://www.insideoutlookexpress.com/backup/clone.htm

Is this possible?
I’ve scanned the HD for bad sectors and also the memory on the computer. Copying the .mbx files is a good tip. What about the address book? It seems as though you have to make registry changes, so how do I get them?

Recovering missing files from a backup?

28 Apr

I lost all files when I had to re-format my Windows XP due to a fu***** virus.

I had a backup via the Norton Ghost, but I can’t find or recover a certain file that is a sentimental interest to me.

It were recording of me and my mom on a digital wave player. I know the files are there, but don’t know how to find it and recover it.

Can anyone help me? It’s just a sentimental thing and not vital, but it would be nice if I can recover it.

Thanks for any help.

Best backup software (Compatible with XP and Vista)?

19 Apr

My work has just lost ALL of its data, we have never really backed up, i am the only person that runs a backup every once in a while, ive managed to recover data back to the beginning of September, but even that has caused chaos!

I need a very good piece of software that will allow me to backup certain files and folders automatically at a set schedule, and i also need it to be able to backup certain areas just by the press of a button to an external device.

What is the best and most reliable software available, free or paid, it doesn’t matter.

Thanks.

David.

What’s the best backup solution for a home computer?

14 Apr

We have two Windows XP SP2 computers. One has a 145 GB hard drive with about 52 GB used, and the other has a 111 GB hard drive with about 57 GB used. We need a complete backup solution that will allow us to recover 100% of a hard drive if there was a total failure, and also give us the ability to restore individual data files if necessary. What does everybody recommend?
