My Dad recently wanted to format his PC and reinstall the OS (xp pro) and backed up all his media to a DVD, unfortunately the DVD became corrupted or damaged and hence he’s now lost all the media which contained precious family photos and videos, all his tax information etc etc
Now he told me he did this last night, and I’ve told him not to install anything else.
Can anyone advise me the best way to attempt to recover any of these files as I don’t have the first clue what to do or program to use. (I’m willing to pay to recover this so any file recovery software license fees ill pay)
All comments much appreciated.

nope if he reformatted there all gone and not recoverable unless your willing to spend thousand’s of dollar’s to try and get just some of them. have him finish installing everything update’s whatever have you and try disc again it may not be corrupted but not able to show due to the fact it need’s updated and the previous software reinstalled that was used to burn disc.. guy’s below me seem to forget pc was reformatted so anything on it is now lost and no recovering data that was written over. you can pay someone 1,500 buck’s to try and recover some and that’s no guarentee.
the data has been written over it’s deffinitely lost. law enforcement don’t even spend the kind of money it would cost to look at a hard drive, unless it’s majorly important to the case and only think i can think of would be terrorists

Should certainly be a good place to start, good luck, hope he gets it all back.

whatever you do, just do not use the computer until you get a recovery software. Because the more you use the computer, the harder it will be to recover the files. don’t ask why, i don’t have time to explain. But as I told in the start, just don’t use your computer until you get a recovery program… you can get some of your files, some programs can undelete the formatted files too. as far as I remember there was a program called “recover my files” but I am not sure where to find it. sorry. good luck.

Same thing happened to me not long time ago. I used Recover My Files http://www.recovermyfiles.com/ but it only recovered my pictures and some PDF files. All the other types of files were corrupted and I was unable to open them.

DO you write new files to that hard disk? If yes, EVEN THE BEST SOFTWARE ONLY HAVE 0.00000000001% to recover it! If not, Try go to download.com and download the “editor’s choice” software! but still they are not 100% able to save the data! I hope I could help you with this answer

So far, everyone seems to be talking about trying to reciver the files from the hard drive. Does your dad still have the DVD that he saved the files to? If so, it may be possible to recover some or all of them from that. Try the free recovery program download from the link below. Worth a go!
Good luck
